In recognition of her consistent success and contributions to the music industry, Spotify has named the exceptionally talented and chart-topping Ugandan female artist, Vinka, as its EQUAL Africa Ambassador for October 2023.
EQUAL Africa is an initiative established by Spotify with the goal of addressing gender inequality in the music industry while spotlighting and amplifying the voices of female artists from across the continent. Vinka, known for her hit “One Bite,” joins a remarkable cohort of artists celebrated for their strength, talent, and remarkable music. This list includes notable names like Fave, Ayra Starr, Asa, Nomfundo Moh, and Amaarae, among others.

Vinka’s appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes the second East African act to hold the position of Ambassador for EQUAL Africa, following in the footsteps of Kenya’s Nikita Kering’, who achieved this honor in November 2022.
Born as Veronica Nakiyingi Lugya, Vinka embarked on her journey in the music industry initially as an artist manager under Swangz Avenue. She underwent a gradual evolution, eventually emerging into the spotlight with her debut single “Stylo.” Her introduction to music was shaped by artists such as Awilo Longomba and Koffi Olomide, whose music played a significant role during her upbringing. In addition to her musical prowess, Vinka’s background as an entertainment prefect at school provided her with valuable insights into the entertainment business. Moreover, her early experiences as a dancer and an artist manager contributed to her becoming an outstanding gem in the industry.
The transition from managing technical aspects to stepping behind the microphone marked the beginning of a flourishing music career for Vinka. She has consistently delivered hit after hit, releasing tracks like ‘Malaika,’ ‘Love Panic,’ ‘Omukwano Gwo,’ ‘Fimbo,’ ‘Amaaso,’ ‘Nja Kusitula,’ ‘Thank God,’ and most recently ‘Bailando,’ among other records that showcase her artistic brilliance.
Vinka’s dedication to her music and her fans was evident in her 2019 campaign to release a new single on the first Friday of every month throughout the year. This endeavor resulted in the creation of songs like ‘Sure’ and ‘Nja Kusitula,’ to name a few.
Refusing to be confined by genre, Vinka’s music encompasses dancehall and various African sounds. She describes her music as catchy, with a unique voice, tone, and vibe.
