Pelere Group Spearheads Value Addition To Shea Nuts With Ground Breaking New Factory in Gulu City

Date:

This afternoon, Pelere Group made a significant entry into Uganda’s agro-processing sector with the inauguration of its new factory in Gulu City. This state-of-the-art facility, located in Layic West Ward, Agonge, marks a major milestone for the company as it moves into its permanent home.

The newly launched factory will significantly boost Pelere Group’s production capacity, allowing the processing of up to 20 tonnes of oilseeds daily. The products include Nilotica shea butter, sunflower seeds, soybeans, groundnuts, castor oil, and more.

This expansion is a crucial step towards Pelere Group’s ambitious goal of positively impacting over one million farmers by 2026. The company aims to create jobs for the local community, increase exports, and contribute to the economic growth of Gulu and the entire country.

During the launch event, Dr. Maggie Kigozi, a renowned industrialist and humanitarian who serves as the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) Representative on the Advisory Committee, commended Pelere Group for its leadership in adding value to agricultural products. She praised the company for creating opportunities for the women of Gulu City through their partnership with the Uganda Development Bank, emphasizing that this initiative paves the way for women’s economic empowerment.

Dr. Kigozi also highlighted the growing demand for Pelere Group’s products, particularly as more women transition from wigs to natural hair, predicting high market demand. She applauded Pelere Group CEO Sandra Letio for her dedication to value addition and for staying focused on her goals.

In her remarks, Sandra Letio expressed excitement about the new facility, describing it as an impactful milestone achieved through persistence and sacrifice. She emphasized that the larger factory would create more jobs, enhance Pelere Group’s commitment to local farmers, and promote sustainable practices.

Sandra further noted that the new facility would not only increase production capabilities but also stimulate the local economy. This development aligns with Pelere Group’s mission to foster socio-economic growth and environmental sustainability in the region. She also thanked the company’s partners, including Uganda Development Bank, for their invaluable support.

Susan Nangwale, Manager of Equity and Venture Capital at Uganda Development Bank acknowledged that Pelere Group’s focus on value addition and export-led growth aligns perfectly with government priorities, making it easy for the bank to support the initiative. Similarly, Samuel Ongom, Investment Manager at Uganda Development Bank Northern Region, encouraged residents to seek knowledge on business development and visit the bank for support in growing their businesses.

Pelere Group Board Chair Juraj Ujhazy noted that while Ghana currently leads in shea butter production, Uganda, with its new factory, is well-positioned to close that gap.
