How Drake’s “ONE DANCE” Influenced An Afrobeats Classic

Date:

Canadian high-profile rapper Aubrey Graham, otherwise known to us as Drake is undeniably one of the biggest hip hop artists of our time. This title he earns not just for his consistent unprecedented run of releasing bangers, but his ludicrous influence.

Drake introduced himself onto the music scene in 2009 with the release of his explosive mixtape So Far Gone, a project that easily mixed classic Young Money-esque rapping with softer flows and melodies with clear pop-sensibilities. This on its own did the ground work that paved way for what would be an incredible run, propelled by his 4th studio album Views. The set included tracks ‘Controlla’, ‘Hotline Bling’, ‘Too Good’, ‘Pop Style’ among others.

Still taken off this body of work was his Kyla and Wizkid assisted ‘One Dance’. The dance track performed so well commercially, peaking at number one of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, surpassing 1 Billion streams on Spotify as of September 2017, sold over 2 Million copies in the US, being the best performing song on Apple Music in 2016. ‘One Dance’ was also named the “Song of the Summer” in the summer of 2016.

The track’s influence and success just didn’t stop there. Fast forward to 5 years later, burgeoning Nigerian singer songwriter and vocalist Fave would go on to sample a line from Drake’s popular song. “I had to bust up the silence” to make her viral single “Baby Riddim”. On it’s chorus she sings “My baby bad, My baby good, My baby all the things I need, My baby buss up the silence oh (Buss it up buss it up), My baby buss up the silence oh (Buss it up buss it up)”.

She first shared this while appearing on The Mob Jazz Podcast back then in May 2022 ahead of her role as headliner at the Club Edition of Shorts Na Lessu. When asked what the line “My baby buss up the silence” meant, Fave revealed that the inspiration came from a Drake song One Dance.

“Baby Riddim” is lifted off the love-induced singer’s debut EP ‘Riddim 5’. The 5 track boset showcased Fave’s sultry melodious vocals and ability to consistently switch up her style while delivering melodies that are front and center of everything she touches. Among her other popular releases and collaborations is “KANTE” (with Davido), “Fever” (with Soundz), Axon produced “Belong to You”, among others. Her multiple talent and abilities is a portrayal that Fave is a force to be reckoned with, and continues to represent for African music to the fullest.
