Walking His Way to the Top, Meet Music Sensation Waya Boy

Date:

In 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a young musician named Waya Boy took a bold step to follow his dreams. With great determination, he walked 20 kilometers from Mpigi, Katende, to Makindye, Kampala, to record his first song, Hullo.

Born Lukwago Tonny on September 4, 2001, Waya Boy is a talented Afro-pop artist from Uganda. Inspired by African music icons like Fela Kuti and Miriam Makeba, his music blends Afro-pop, R&B, and soul into a unique style.

The journey wasn’t easy. It took over seven hours, and he faced many challenges along the way. By 7:00 pm, the army was enforcing strict curfews to keep people off the streets as part of the COVID-19 safety rules. But Waya Boy didn’t give up. His love for music kept him going.

When he reached Banaj Records studio, he finally recorded his song, which he had written during his long walk. By morning, the recording was done. Feeling proud, Waya Boy began his journey back home to Katende in Mpigi District.

Waya Boy’s success wouldn’t have been possible without his family. Even though they struggled financially, his mother and siblings gave him emotional support and helped him stay positive.

His hard work paid off. Hullo became a hit, playing on Galaxy FM, one of Uganda’s top stations, and NBS TV, a leading network in the country.

Waya Boy’s story is one of passion and perseverance. Despite the challenges, he pushed through and achieved national recognition, inspiring other young artists to chase their dreams.
