K-pop Supergroup BTS Smashes YouTube & Spotify Records With ‘Butter’ Just 24 Hours After Release

Date:

BTS ‘Butter’ melted hearts and YouTube records in just a matter of hours after its release.

BTS’s new single “Butter” has only been out for one day, but it’s already broken an important record, securing the highest 24-hour debut in YouTube history—at least for now.

The K-pop supergroup premiered the music video for their new single, “Butter,” on Thursday. In just its initial hour of availability on YouTube collected over 21 million views (10 million views in its first 13 minutes) – breaking the platform’s record for most video views in an hour.

By the time the clock struck 12 EST on May 22, the new summer anthem which arrives as the second all-English official release of the seven-member boy band — which includes Jin, J-Hope, RM, Suga, V, Jimin, and Jungkook’s career. — as of midnight EST had earned an estimated 113 million views on YouTube, giving it the biggest first-day view count of all time smashing the outlet’s 24-hour views record in the process. It should come as no surprise BTS had set the previous record with their first all-English single, 2020’s ‘Dynamite,’ which racked up approximately 101 million views in its first 24 hours.

BTS previously set the 24-hour debut record with last summer’s “Dynamite,” which racked up 101.1 million views in its first day.

This number is based off the live YouTube view count when “Butter” reached the 24-hour mark.

“Butter” will no doubt sell extraordinarily well, with two versions currently available for download and vinyl and cassette singles for sale on BTS’s website (at press time, the vinyl are sold out). The infectious disco-pop anthem is also pacing for an astronomical streaming debut. On Friday afternoon, Chart Data reported that “Butter” had reached a reported 14.87 million Spotify streams and counting, and that it stood a chance at breaking the platform’s all-time single day record currently held by Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (17.223 million). and its instrumental occupy the #1 and #2 spots respectively on real-time iTunes sales tallies.

Even if it falls short of the all-time single-day Spotify record, “Butter” is off to a stellar start, and this could be the beginning of a historic week for BTS.

Having racked up all these figures, BTS’s ‘Butter’ points to a massive Billboard Hot 100 Debut. The video for “Butter” starts off in black-and-white, but soon turns to bright oranges, blues and pinks. At one point, the group’s members also line-up and hold mugshots of themselves.
