In 2014, Ugandan music was experiencing a transformative phase music, this saw a speedy ascension as a new generation of stars were consolidating their dominance in the mainstream. Among them being Spice Diana, Sheebah, to mention but a few.
Born Bagonza Alexander, A Pass too emerged as one of the most exciting voices at the time, thanks to Tuli Kubigere for it launched him to mainstream dominance. Not just on the charts but in the hearts of many music lovers.
His unique soundscape was characterized by a unique blend of reggae, dancehall, and Afrobeat influences.
A Pass’ knack for heart felt and warming lyrics further affirmed his position in the music industry, both as a singer, record producer and song writer. As a song writer, he has crafted for singers like Bebe Cool (African Girl), and Juliana Kanyomozi (Voodoo), and others.
Having quit his then music label Badi Music, A Pass went independent and went on to drop his career defining debut album Nva Kampala. The 22 track project carried songs that deeply resonated with listeners. Songs like Mariana, and Wuuyo continue to be fan favorites to-date. “Memories” on which he featured Lilian Mbabazi and I’m Loving further showcased his lyrical magic and his versatility while shining a light on his ability to infuse emotional storytelling with infectious rhythms.
With his place at the summit of the mainstream firmly secured, A Pass consolidated his status not only as a singer but also as a fashion icon, bagging the award for being the Most Stylish Male Artist at the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards in 2018. He has also won numerous awards for music.
In 2018, he released his second studio album African Yayo. The era-defining LP parked several hit records like Mummy, Didadada and others.
The album showcased A Pass as an artist whose music captured the street’s pulse while further highlighting the industry of his artistry as he effortlessly straddled both dancehall, zouk and RnB.
Alex has over the years not only delivered super dope projects but also lent his talent to his colleagues for who he helped craft hit records.
From hopping on Ykee Benda’s megahit Turn Up the Vibe to helping launch Shaydee to mainstream success with a killer chorus on Loving and Missing. He went on to later serve up his 3rd LP Bagonza, and later another self titled body of work A PASS at the close of 2024.
