Sal Deejay, hip-hop & are Urban Music are a match made in heaven!
Salmah Srlmyr Peace popularly known as The Sal Deejay is a plethora of many talents in one; from being a media personality (specializing as a radio presenter), writer/blogger, open-format deejay, songwriter as well as Producer.
Having been passionate about music and entertainment as a whole, Srlmyr shared about this and more while joining the boys Felix, Markula, Paulo & Lezzo back then in May 2022 for The Tribe UG Podcast’s 3rd Episode for season 2.
The eponymously versatile disc jockey started out her career at 97 FM Radiocity in its earlier days as a host of a weekday music request show from 7 Pm and juggled it with her banking job before she could later pick a special interest in deejaying.
Salmah was also at the same time running a personal blog that focused on urban music and Ugandan hip-hop music and minor songwriting on one end.
Her passion for entertainment and love for mixing and creating new sounds later led her to join disc jockeying under the mentorship of Selector Jay who trained her at Club Guvnor. Initially specializing in hip-hop as a genre, Salmah didn’t have it the easy way; given that the reception of the genre wasn’t as fast as that of other musical styles.
She shared that due to consistency and love for the genre, she kept at it and is happy that the reception for hip-hop is steadily growing. Pre-COVID, Salmah had a residence with DJ Sheilla at The Gardens Najjera, though this editor for one discovered her as a DJ having listened to her set from the Radiocity New Year’s Eve (RCNYE) of 2019 and she had unique vibrations going on in mixes in terms of her song picks.
Looks like it wasn’t just my ear that was captured as; soon as events were officially opened, her bookings shot up and so was her rate card; as the guys casually said on the podcast. She’s since played at the SMACK League, the Feminist Brunch, Oktoberfest, and the Gunnar Sound Wave, among other gigs.
Her high-energy sets, ability to get any crowd moving and unique style have earned her a loyal following among radio audiences, revelers, and music lovers alike.
It is little wonder Salmah’s name continues to etch whenever female deejays as a conversation come up and this has seen her simultaneously win hearts in the mainstream but on the urban music scene as well, as she’s among the few who have genuinely carried it and pushed the urban music agenda consistently over the years hence proving she’s worth the talk.
If she not isn’t putting them on in one of her colorful sets, she’s rooting for them in interviews/ conversations or even her social media; knowing the influence radio and deejays have on artist careers.
Artists like Mootownoh, Tucker HD, Naxa, Lagum the Rapper, Rulz, Dreventy, JC Muyonjo, Rxdn3y Ma, The Hommie, Akeine, and Kohen Jaycee are some of the acts she has put on; with the hopes that by you lending them your ear too, might find a favorite new artist to add to your listening radar.
Cosigned by Tiesto, the gem of her kind, given her hands-on in songwriting and production practice intends to someday put out a 7-track project and enlist some of these above acts on them tunes.
For now, Sal continues to call upon artists to submit their music for consideration and play during her deejay sets and is also willing to offer her honest feedback to those interested. Catch Sal Deejay on 97 FM Radiocity every Monday (Jam Floor Fillers) from 6 PM and Fridays (Live Wire) the same time.
Also, make her Mixcloud yours too by listening in to some of her deejay sets and follow her on social to be in the know of the gigs and where she is to play. For an event seeking to give your attendees the time of their lives, HIRE Sal!
