It’s about that time of the year;- the time when Spotify unwraps it’s annual Wrap Up “Spotify Wrapped” campaign; an annual round-up of the top artists, albums, songs and playlists of the year as streamed by its more than 381 million users worldwide; while also enabling them generate their own (personalized) according to their listening habits.
February 2021 also marked Spotify’s official entry into the Ugandan market; meaning that more people would get to move from having to make use of a VPN so as to access the service. Thanks to internet penetration and more exposure, more and more people continue to embrace streaming culture.
Spotify yesterday officially unveiled its annual 2021 Wrapped campaign and personalized user experience inspired by just that while revealing the top artists, albums, songs, playlists and podcasts from the creators that helped soundtrack the year. As the PRO Spotify Stans of Uganda, below is a snapshot of Spotify’s Wrapped lists in Uganda, in terms of how the musical year went back here at home: the artists, songs kept Ugandans entertained, and who were the local artists who Ugandan Spotify users listened to most this year.
One common feat you’ll realize about the toppers from this year, is that the artist either had an EP or album out, of course the overall hit songs made the list too, however, “Project” artists dominated. Azawi had ‘African Music’, Eddy Kenzo ‘Made In Africa’, The Weeknd ‘After Hours’ from 2020, carrying & earning more record breaking numbers this year. Kale, let’s do this.
According to the press release by the Spotify HQ:
Drake is Uganda’s most streamed artist, followed by Justin Bieber. Nigerian artists received plenty of love from Uganda as well; with Burna Boy coming in as the third most streamed artist, and WizKid the fourth. Rounding up the top five is American rapper Kanye West. Drake had ‘CLB’ which had hit songs ‘Way 2 Sexy’, ‘Fountains ft. Tems’, Justine Bieber dropped the album;- ‘Justice’ back then in March, Wizkid had ‘MIL’ the Deluxe; not to get started on the mad PR hit track ‘Essence’ & tour has had; wrapping this category up is Kanye, I mean, the man who dropped an album with black artwork, after months of delaying, postponing release dates; hence making his LPs among the most anticipated releases for the year.
The most streamed track in Uganda on Spotify all 2021 long was Ruger’s Bounce, followed by Fireboy DML’s Peru “para” then Understand by Omah Lay being the third most listened to track on the platform in Uganda. Joeboy’s Sip (Alcohol) came in fourth, and The Kid LAROI’s STAY (with Justin Bieber) fifth.
Shockingly, with a count of only 19 monthly listeners on the platform, Uthman is the most streamed local artist in Uganda on Spotify, followed by Azawi, who is also the most streamed local female artist in Uganda. $hyli is third, then Eddy Kenzo is fourth. Sheebah closes off the top five and is also the second most streamed local female artist.
