So, whether you’re looking for laugh-out-loud sitcoms, feel-good dramas, or animated gems, here are some of the best family-friendly series to binge on Showmax.

  1. The Secret Life of Pets

You know the thing they say about “When the cat is away, the mice will play”. The must-watch comic animation The Secret Life of Pets explores what pets do when their owners aren’t around at home. The story follows Max, a loyal terrier (cat) whose life is turned upside down when his owner brings home a new dog, Duke. The two reluctantly team up after they get lost in the city and must escape a gang of abandoned pets led by a rebellious bunny named Snowball, who for some reason was my favorite character in the movie. Part 2 of the movie continues Max’s journey as he adjusts to life with a new baby in the family. Alongside his friends, he embarks on adventures that teach him about bravery and change, while Snowball dreams of being a superhero. Both parts of The Secret Life of Pets can be streamed on Showmax now.

2. Trolls World Tour

The vibrant and colorful animated musical adventure follows Poppy and Branch as they discover that their world is much bigger than they thought. They learn that there are six different Troll tribes, each dedicated to a different genre of music—Pop, Rock, Classical, Techno, Funk, and Country. When the power-hungry Queen Barb of the Rock Trolls sets out to dominate all music by stealing their techno strings and bringing them under her rule, Queen Poppy and her friends set out to thwart her evil plans and  must unite the other tribes to save their identities, diverse musical world and the power of embracing different perspective. It’s currently streaming on Showmax, and I do trust you’ll enjoy watching it.

Shrek

My first time interaction with this character was when Geoffrey Lutaaya sampled some of the clips from the beloved animated comedy  of the film’s main character Shrek dancing and featured them in the music video for his track ‘Nassanga’ in the 2005. It was until I grew up and at around 12 learnt that the reclusive and grumpy yet kind-hearted ogre was from the movie Shrek. Well the movie follows his life as he goes about his life in a swamp till its disrupted when a group of fairy-tale creatures is exiled by the evil Lord Farquaad. To reclaim his home, Shrek sets off on a quest with his talkative sidekick, Donkey, to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded tower. Along the way, unexpected friendships and surprising discoveries on friendship, love and what it means to be a hero unfold, making for such a heartwarming and hilarious adventurous watch, or even stream on Showmax now.

4. Despicable Me

Forget Money Heist, paint a picture, what happens when a supervillain (Gru) teams up with his lil buddies of a legion of loyal followers of minions on a mission to steal the moon. That’s what the beloved hit animation “Despicable Me” is all about. Gru’s life however takes an unexpected turn when he adopts three orphaned girls as part of his scheme—only to find himself growing attached to them. As he juggles his villainous ambitions and newfound fatherhood, he learns that family might be the greatest treasure of all. This film is also widely a hit, thanks to its soundtrack, Pharrell William’s ‘Happy’, a feel-good classic that’s such an instant mood lifter. Find Despicable Me on Showmax now and stream the heck out it. It is so hilarious and worth every second of your watch time.

Okay this piece was meant to be short and sweet, but the titles just keep popping up in y head and I can’t help but keep putting you on, largely cuz asides musicals and comedy (sitcoms included), animations and family movies are my favorite genre of watch- entertainment.

5. Sing

Having the courage to step out of your comfort zone and take a leap of faith, leaning into pursuing your passion and talent is something that this particular animation bares. That’s because most times, these films are created to be a sorta edutainment avenue to share key life lessons and instill values in the children who watch them. The heartwarming animated musical comedy “Sing” follows the story of Buster Moon, a koala and theater owner, who is desperately trying to save his struggling business. He then “cooks” (as is the saying these days), in other words, he comes up with the idea of hosting a grand singing competition, offering a substantial cash prize to attract contestants. However, a typo in the prize amount flyer inflates the prize, attracting a massive crowd of hopeful singers. The  diverse group of animal contestants prepare for the competition, each with their own personal struggles and dreams. There’s Rosita, a devoted pig mother longing to rediscover her passion for singing; Johnny, a gorilla trying to break free from his criminal family’s expectations; Meena, a shy elephant with an incredible voice; Ash, a rebellious porcupine seeking artistic independence; and Mike, a cocky mouse with a smooth voice and a gambling problem.

6. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

I must confess, I must be among the few kids who never got to watch any of the Harry Potter movies plus “High School Musical” growing up. Fortunately, Showmax is here for the save, and so I can now stream it, courtesy of Showmax. Inspired by J.K. Rowling’s beloved popular collection of books, the magical fantasy follows Harry Potter, an 11-year-old boy who discovers he is a wizard and is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As he makes new friends, learns spells, and uncovers secrets about his past, Harry soon realizes he is destined for a greater battle against the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, along with the rest of the Harry Potter series, can be streamed on Showmax now.

7. Kung Fu Panda

This is one of those that don’t need much introduction. The action-packed animated comedy follows Po, a really unapologetically clumsy but lovable panda who dreams of becoming a kung fu master. When he is unexpectedly chosen as the legendary Dragon Warrior, he must train under Master Shifu and prove himself to the Furious Five—Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane. As the villainous Tai Lung threatens their homeland, Po discovers that true strength comes from believing in himself. Catch Po in action on Showmax.

8. Garfield

This gem is one fun-filled live-action and animated comedy. It is about one of my favorite fictional cats of all time; Garfield. The lazy, lasagna-loving orange cat who rules his owner Jon’s house—until his world is turned upside down by the arrival of Odie, a lovable but clueless dog. When Odie goes missing, Garfield sets off on an unexpected adventure to rescue him, proving that even the laziest cat can be a hero when it matters most.
