Over the last couple of years, baggy outfits (cloths that loosely hang on one’s body. Are overly sized) have made a fleeting return and since dominated, not just runaways, but also everyday fashion trends. That’s not to say that slimmer-fit styles are a write-off, oversized clothes have rather become a thing that may Gen-Z(s) are embracing of late.
Some could argue that their growing popularity is as a response in revolt to being the opposite of the millennials who were rather drawn to skinnier outfits. There’s been also a belief that young people of this generation are drawn to baggies as a response to the post-pandemic need for comfort, as these are rather more comfortable.
You would all agree with me, on how much pop culture, and pop stars have such an effect on the Gen-Z for we tend to consume what our favorite singers, movie stars, etc tend to endorse or dorn. Among the stars to whom baggy fits have been an overriding choice is Billie Eilish, Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid, Ordeal and in Africa, Rema, Bien, Kapeke, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Omah Lay, Elijah Kitaka, Wizkid, among others.
The thing about fashion is that it is ever evolving and shifting. Meaning that what sometimes seems like a thing of the past can always resurface. An example I can sight is the crocs which first made their way in the early 1990s (1991 to be exact). It wasn’t until recently that the slip-on foot ware made its return to the mainstream, this time more improved, more colorful, funkier and fashionable like never before.
Others have it explained that the choice of the baggy jeans/ clothes aesthetic by Gen-Z(s) whether it is to an event, bar, club, or normal hangout/ gathering serves as a subtle rebellion against societal expectations of “dressing up” in the same way previous generations did and expressing themselves, without fear, or caring what anyone thinks of them.
Should you wish to test drive or rock the oversized outfits yourself, here are some few tips and tricks on how to nail the look:
- Consider Proportion.
This is in the sense that you into consideration fitting a piece of clothing with a smaller one, say the small top- big pant approach or vice versa as a way of voluming down. This helps not only balances the outfit but also give it structure to give you a modern look. So, if you choose to wear baggy pants, balance them with a more fitted top, such as a slim fit sweat. The contrast between the two items adds an interesting dynamic to your look, creating a modern aesthetic.
2. Don’t be afraid to flaunt some skin.
When it comes to oversized clothing, one unwritten rule of always slanging the look is always show some skin—somewhere, anywhere in your body. This is because its been tested, approved and confirmed by many stylists that a dash of skin will save it from being too frumpy. You could for example pair a big shirt, while showcasing a pair of short shorts and show off a bit of bare leg. When stepping out for a date, you could settle for baggy suit pants and maybe an easy shirt while serving skin.
