Magixx’s “OKAY” Is More Than Meets the Ear

Date:

Building on the momentum he had raised last year with his widely popular single “All Over”, and previous hits like “OVERLOADING” on which he appears with his label mates at Mavin Recordings (Crayon, Ladipoe, Ayra Starr, and Boy Spyce), 2022’s ‘Love Don’t Cost A Dime (Re-UP) featuring Ayra Starr, Nigerian afro-fusion singer and songwriter Adelabu Alexander also professionally known as Magixx opened 2024 with “Okay”.

Released on February 9th, the track was produced by Jonn P. You could wonder why, I am only highlighting or talking about it now, despite being released nearly 8 months ago.  I actually have it saved to my favorite songs, and listen to it from time to time. Most of times I was lost in the young superstar’s smooth vocals, and its production. It was until Sunday this past week when I got a glimpse of its Lyrics visualizer, and boy was my heart moved.

“Okay” easily fits neatly into afro depression, a sub-genre where Omah Lay shines as he covers dark themes, while making a really dance and groovy appealing songs. The single’s artwork is symbolic too, for it is of Magixx with a half head on water; like a sea, to depict being overwhelmed and battling challenges.

In the soulful ballad, which according to me is Magixx’s most emotional work ever, Magixx touches on various human themes, as you are going to see as we unpack its lyrics below:

Verse 1:

You know mankind so wicked, Na why me tread carefully everyday, See as I dey mind my business, See say I dey mind my business, Only your mama wants you bigger, And when me dey for my darkest times, Nobody to check on me then, See as I dey grind for fitness.”

In the verse above, the multifaceted Mavins singer explores the complexities of life and love, singing about envy from close associates, trust, offering introspection into his personal burdens.

He goes on to to sing on the Pre-Chorus:

Like ama soldier, Family rest pon me shoulder, Never see clear when me sober, So I must to roll one, Life of a loner, All of the stress I been under, Pray that my cup runneth over over, But I’m okay tonight, Oh oh, But we gon’ be alright, Eh eh, And I’m okay tonight,Oh oh, Yeah we gon’ be alright, Eh eh”

Further expressing his newfound deep and vulnerable side, Magixx then sings of the weight of the responsibilities he carries; which many may relate to especially first born children who you know have to step up, vouch for their younger siblings, most times getting lost in it and neglecting taking care of themselves in the process. Using introspective Magixx croons of seeking solace and relief in binge drinking and smoking amidst these struggles.

Hook:

“Show me all the loving now, When I still dey alive o, Cause all the pain and all of the pressure, Fit dey make a man fall to depression, Sleepless nights and sacrifice, Maky my mind dey fly, Be like them forget sey I be human being, No forget sey I be human being.”

He then wraps it up with a reflective detour urging those who love him to give him his flowers while he can still smell them.

Aside seeing Magixx veer away from his usual themes of love and hearbreak, we see him offer a message of hope, amidst personal struggles, showcasing his resilience and optimistic outlook on look on life despite the stresses of life and that it does get better.

Okay demonstrates Magixx’s artistic growth and ability to explore new thematic territories. Whereas the song is well written, produced, and catchy to listen to, the messaging in it is a profound reflection of some of the challenges young people go through, celebrity or not. So, always remember that IT EVENTUALLY GETS BETTER.

Still in that vein, the young star’s track could have been a reflection of a true story as he opened up when in an interview recently saying that his biggest challenge is the pressure that comes with being famous, noting:

“There’s a path to every great person’s destiny. And in figuring out the path, I learned that you’ve got to go through this… I was dealing with public acceptance, family issues, accepting where I am at to improve myself, and still meeting public demands. It’s a whole lot. You’re still the songwriter, you’re still the person who’s going to show up for video call, you are still the person who’s going to pick your family’s call. You’re still the person who has a love interest, you’re still the person who’s going to fly out every weekend outside Lagos to perform for people. It’s a lot but people don’t even know. People don’t know that I can’t repeat the same cloth. For instance, this is the last time you will see the outfit I’m currently wearing on social media. I’ve to think about the cloth to wear every day. Normal people don’t think about those things. It’s a lot of pressure on artists but people from outside don’t see that.”
