Last Friday in an invite-only event held at The Sheraton Hotel Gardens, Kampala, nominees in the first ever Janzi Awards show were unveiled.

The Janzi Awards are envisioned as an inclusive experience where outstanding achievements, innovations and diversity in Uganda’s Cultural, Creative and Performing Arts forms will be recognized and celebrated, and this will see over 90 awards being awarded are from various categories capturing key domains in the Industry.

Speaking at the event, the Janzi Awards Organizing Committee Chairperson Sylivia Owori echoed that they had received over 75,000 nominees since nomination was by public view based, and they toned it down to 300.

To make the awards as inclusive as possible as per the organizers’ vision, over 96 categories were announced but not limited to the Music, Performing Arts, Collecting Societies, Film & Video, Visual Arts & Crafts, Books & Publishing, Software & Innovations, Cultural & National Heritage and Support Services.

Among the 300 announced nominees is Azawi is who is up for 4 JA’s in categories Outstanding Afro Beat/Pop Artist, Outstanding Performer, Female Artist of the Year & Outstanding Album of the Year for “African Music” the album. Zuli Tums on the other hand was nominated for Outstanding RnB Artist, and seasoned automotive engineer and comical figure Kiboneka Moses also known as Uncle Mo for Outstanding Comedy Performance. Voting is to be 30% public vote and 70% by the Janzi Awards Academy (JAA) members which is constituted by representation from all the 9 key categories. These will review the nominees after the public vote is closed on December,5 and vote for the winners in all 96 categories so as to gauge the overall winners.

While at the D-day of the event (December 11 and 12 at the Kololo Independence Grounds), the Janzi Awards Academy will honor Afrigo Band’s Moses Matovu  with the Janzi Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in Music.
