MTN Uganda; the leading telecommunications operator in Uganda serving an approximate 11.2 million plus subscribers across Uganda renewed its operational license yesterday; 13th June, 2020.

The telecommunications giant has been offering services under a Second National Operator License for the operation of a telecommunications system issued on 15 April 1998 for a period of twenty years. The License did expire on the 21st of October 2018 but was variously extended to accommodate conclusion of renewal negotiations which have been ongoing for close to 2years.

Yesterday, MTN Uganda was pleased to announce the conclusion of negotiations for the renewal of its Second National Operator license which had earlier become obsolete in October 2018.

Having fulfilled all conditions precedent to the license, including the payment of a total sum of US$100 million (equivalent to Ugx. 372Billion) as license renewal fee for a period of 12 years commencing 1 July 2020. This does mean that the operator’s license to offer services in the region is on till 2032.

MTN revealed that they would conclude with the signature of the License Agreement to seal the new negotiations with the Uganda Communications Commission within the coming days. MTN Uganda made the big announcement in a series of tweets:
