Adedamola Adefolahan also professionally as Fireboy DML has today arrived his second studio album; having released his debut album ‘Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps’ last year in November. LTAG was an absolute mashup and a highly acclaimed record as singles like ‘What If I say’, “Vibration’, ‘Energy’ among others were favorites to many. The act was set to come to Uganda this year for an event that was yet to be revealed then the pandemic kicked in.
For the first time since his domineering album debut with Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, Fireboy DML has put out new music. This wait has taken a little over 6 months, as during this whole time, he’s been in the studio cooking, and just last month, one of the results of his efforts ‘New York City Girl’ (a tune with an Afrobeats fuse with the laid-back R&B) was released alongside its music video.
The Nigerian rookie who is signed to YBNL Nation, an independent record label founded by Nigerian star Olamide announced his return to the forefront of the scene: hence unveiling dates his second studio album was expected to drop, alongside its track listing, and artwork in an Instagram post:
on Fireboy DML’s 17-track album, he once again shows off his youthful and fluid flow in his new LP ‘Apollo’ which according to him, he likes to describe as an “album is about evolution, growth, love and pain.”
APOLLO folds a diverse sonic palette into a contemporary Afropop iteration, under a total playtime of 48 minutes and 23 seconds.
The LP includes singles and features: Eli, Tattoo, New York City Girl, Champ, Spell Favourite Song, Lifestyle, Airplane Mode, Dreamer, Afar, Go Away, Shadé, Friday Feeling, God Only Knows, Sound, and Remember Me; with guest appearances from D Smoke, Wande Coal, and Olamide. The album was expertly produced by Pheelz, Type A, P. Prime and Iambeatz.
”New York City Girl” is oddly reminiscent of the storyline in ‘Jealous’. Boy meets girl and falls decidedly in love with her, it’s an affair that’s destined for heartbreak. But, in the moment, he urges her to give herself a chance “before [she] leaves for the summertime”.
The sensual melodies on “Tattoo”, and his silky voice conjures poignant emotions also do stand out on this melody. Another single that he outed prior the album’s release was ‘ELI’.
Lyrical musings on fame, doubt and love — woven between melodic percussion from producers like Type-A — add enticing layers to the singer-songwriter’s music.
