MTN Uganda CEO, Wim Vanhelleputte

And it’s a Wrap for Mr. Wim at MTN Uganda.

In the latest reshuffles and changes taking place at MTN Group, the telecom giant is shaking up things a little continent wide.

According to the MTN Group Website, the move is a bid to support its accelerated execution of the Ambition 2025 strategy.

A new senior MTN Group position (Operations Executive for Liberia, Guinea-Conakry, Guinea-Bissau, and Congo-Brazzaville) has been created and this to be occupied by Mr. Wim Vanhelleputte.

The Belgian’s tenure as Chief Executive Officer / Head of MTN Uganda has had a six year run; and hence seen it reach greater heights. He is set to depart this role and take on his new one effective July 31st, 2022; according to an announcement by Charles Mbiire; the MTN Uganda Chairperson Board of Directors.

“During his six (6) years of service, Mr. Vanhelleputte successfully delivered the renewal of MTN’s NTO License, the separation of the mobile financial services business from the telco business and the initial public offer and listing of the Company on the Uganda Securities Exchange,” Mbire wrote.

“Mr. Vanhelleputte has been promoted to a regional role as Operating Executive for the WECA Markets of Liberia, Guinea-Conakry, Guinea-Bissau, and Congo-Brazzaville within the MTN Group effective August 1, 2022” he added.

The Group does believe that in this position, Wim will leverage his experience in furthering financial inclusion and strengthening MTN’s position as a market leader.

He’s been replaced by Sylvia Wairimu Mulinge who will assume office on October 1, 2022. Ms. Mulinge is no stranger to working in telcos.

She formerly served in Kenya’s Safaricom as Chief Consumer Business Officer, where she joined in 2007 and over the years occupied various senior roles including Head of Retail, Head of Sales, and Director of Consumer Business. She is a graduate of the University of Nairobi, Kenya, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree (first-class honours).

“I would like to welcome Sylvia Mulinge to MTN Uganda. I believe that her experience will be beneficial to MTN, particularly given her alignment to our strategic intent of leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress. The Board is confident that Ms. Mulinge will continue the work of growing the Company as a leading provider of telecommunications and digital solutions.” Mbire concludes

In the interim, the current Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Andrew Bugembe, has been appointed as Acting Chief Executive Officer effective August 1, 2022, until September 30, 2022.
