Described as one of the 2020 collaboration we never knew we needed, Sam Smith and Burna Boy might have done exactly that on their new single ‘My Oasis’. The track sees the ‘Stay With Me’ singer; Sam Smith team up with Afrobeats star Burna Boy.

It’s the second collaboration the 26-year-old singer, has released this year following his duet with Demi Lovato back then in April on “I’m Ready”.

Since the launch of his sophomore album ”The Thrill of It All” which had singles such as “Too Good At Goodbyes” and “Pray” in 2017, Smith has kept releasing a steady stream of new singles including the hits “How Do You Sleep?” and the Normani-assisted “Dancing With a Stranger.” Smith has been putting the finishing touches to his forthcoming album ‘To Die For this summer’, and was due last May but because of the increasing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic (as it was inappropriate in light of the pandemic), Sam decided to change the name to be sensitive towards the currently health crisis and thereby indefinitely postponed the LP’s release. The album’s original title track ‘To Die For’ was released on Valentine’s Day and the other single ‘I’m Ready’, a joint single with Demi Lovato, followed in April.

‘I have done a lot of thinking the last few weeks and feel that the title of my album and imminent release doesn’t feel right.  have come to the decision to continue working on the album and make some important changes and additions,’ he explained.  Sam Smith promised fans that “I am still going to bring out some new music over the next few months.”

He kicked this off with a Cover of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ in May on May 20th, 2020.

Burna Boy on the other hand had an immensely successful musical year in 219, thanks to his album ‘African Giant’ (with singles like ‘Anybody’, ‘On the Low’ and ‘Gum Body’) that he released exactly a year ago (came out in July, 2019). This album earned him a nomination in the 2020 Grammy Awards. The Nigerian megastar went ahead to release singles; ‘Odogwu’ in February and ‘Wonderful’ mid this month of July.  These of course put him on an even dizzier scale of heights than before”. and oh yeah, he was also featured on Stormzy’s ‘Own It”.

After taking a short break through quarantine, pop superstar Sam Smith has returned with some new music. On Wednesday (July 29th), Sam Smith announced via his social media the forthcoming release of ‘My Oasis,’ a new track on which he was to feature singer Burna Boy. The post was a video teasing the brand-new single that was due out Thursday (July 30th). Throughout the black-and-pink teaser video, fans can hear what sounds like the opening of the track, with some hypnotic bells and a skipping bassline. Watch the snippet here:

“This track has been a beautiful release of emotions for me during this time,” Smith said of new collaboration.

On “My Oasis”,” Smith sings of helplessly needing someone, even though the return of this partner’s affections seems questionable. “You play with my emotions/I’m flowing like the ocean/I pray for your devotion/’ Cause there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you,” Smith sings on the chorus. Nigerian singer-songwriter Burna Boy reflects the same feelings of longing in his verse.

“This track has been a beautiful release of emotions for me during this time,” Smith said in a statement. They co-wrote the song with Jimmy Napes and Burna Boy. “I’ve been a fan of Burna Boy for years now and am so happy to have a tune with him.”, revealed Smith. The song’s production was mainly handled by Llya, Randy Merrill, Jimmy Napes, Burna Boy and Sam Smith and it was acoustic for the most part.

When you give “My Oasis” a listen, it appears to be a very different sound for Burna. He was equally as excited about the release of their collaboration and even further revealed that they recorded his verse on his birthday.

“My Oasis” was released Thursday July 30th. It has a total play time of 2minutes 59seconds and it is out now and available on Sam Smith’s website and all digital music streaming and downloading platforms. Stream it here. 📌
