Apple Music names Azawi’s ‘My Year’ Best New Song

Date:

Just after a day of releasing ‘My Year’, Apple Music released their routine playlist for the best global releases and AZAWI’s single was the only African song in the first 10 songs sitting comfortably at number 2 only behind J. Cole’s Interlude. The only other single is by Nigerian Ladipo at twelfth position.

The global streaming giant uses algorithms and music editors to compile these lists. And because it’s based on true streaming data, this gives the Swangz Artist a reason to smile. The single also currently stands at number 19 on the Apple Music Daily Top 100 playlist as of the time of writing this article.

My Year’ has already been billed by local music critics to be the best produced piece of Music from our industry in a long time. The song written by Azawi and produced by Michael Fingers has continued to impress beyond Uganda as evidenced by clips shared on Azawi timelines showing people in Canada and Tanzania’s national broadcaster making a special premier of the song.

The new Afro-pop joint was released alongside a befitting video shot at Moonlight Studios in Johannesburg. Directed by Kenny Mumba, Azawi appears with her new bold look in this multi-scene colorful video. The director delivered an abstract feel-good tapping into the global trend of abstract videos with great visuals.

Will Azawi lead the global breakthrough the industry has been craving for a while? Will it be this song or one or the other songs on the album that will be released this year? Azawi’s album is expected mid-year and if this is a feel of what is yet to come, then Azawi is going for higher bets, according to Sqoop Editor Isaac Ssejjombwe.
